I am a distinct and highly-regarded regional variant of the famous Alphonso (Hafus), specifically adapted to the warmer, drier climates of South India. I produce medium-sized, egg-shaped fruits with a smooth skin that turns a beautiful golden-yellow when ripe. My flesh is deep orange, remarkably creamy, and fiberless, offering the classic "Hafus" richness with a slightly more robust sweetness and a powerful tropical aroma.
I am the South Indian version of the legendary Alphonso, valued for my ability to maintain the premium "Hafus" eating quality while being more resilient to inland heat.
While my parentage is the Alphonso of the Konkan coast, I have been cultivated and refined in the orchards of Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh, earning the "Madras" prefix.
I need deep watering during my flowering and fruit-set stages, but I am more tolerant of the drier intervals typical of the South Indian plateau compared to my coastal cousins.
I require full, direct sunlight for 8 to 10 hours a day; intense sun exposure is what helps me build my high sugar levels and deep internal color.
I thrive in hot, tropical climates between 26°C and 40°C and am better suited to handling the high summer temperatures of the Madras (Chennai) region.
I grow best in deep, well-draining red loamy or alluvial soil and need a sunny, open space where my canopy can spread to its full potential.
I am a moderate-to-heavy feeder; I appreciate organic manure, neem cake, and a balanced fertilizer applied after the monsoon to prepare for the spring harvest.
My scientific name is Mangifera indica 'Madras Hafus' and I belong to the Anacardiaceae family.
My fruit flesh is safe for pets, but like all mangoes, my sap and leaves contain irritants, and my pit should be kept away from them at all times.
My dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round oxygen and acts as a natural air filter, cooling the environment during the hot summer months.
I am rich in Vitamin A and antioxidants; I provide the gourmet "Alphonso experience" to regions where the traditional Ratnagiri Hafus might struggle to grow.
I am generally more resistant to "spongy tissue" than the coastal Alphonso, but I should be monitored for fruit flies and mango hoppers during the season.
I am a sturdy and productive perennial tree that can provide you with premium, buttery harvests for 40 to 60 years.
