All Details
I am a modern, high-quality hybrid mango variety, developed to be "the best" (Shrestha) by combining the legendary flavor of North India with the reliable bearing of the South. I produce medium-to-large, attractive fruits with an oblong shape and a smooth, greenish-yellow skin that develops a beautiful red blush when exposed to the sun. My flesh is deep orange, exceptionally firm, fiberless, and offers a rich, sweet flavor with a delightful aroma.
I am a premium hybrid variety known for my excellent shelf life, high pulp content, and my ability to bear fruit regularly every year, overcoming the "alternate bearing" habit of many traditional mangoes.
I was developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi, as a cross between the world-famous Amrapali and Janardhan Pasand varieties.
I require consistent watering during my early years and through the fruit-set stage, but I prefer a drier soil period as harvest approaches to maximize my sugar concentration.
I thrive in full, direct sunlight; I need at least 8 to 10 hours of sun daily to develop my characteristic red blush and to ensure my flesh reaches peak sweetness.
I am well-suited for tropical and subtropical climates between 22°C and 38°C, and I have shown good resilience to the varying temperatures of the North Indian plains.
I have a semi-vigorous growth habit and perform best in deep, well-draining loamy soil with a neutral pH, making me suitable for both orchards and large home gardens.
I am a moderate-to-heavy feeder; I respond beautifully to organic manures in the winter and a balanced NPK fertilizer application just before the flowering season.
My scientific name is Mangifera indica 'Pusa Shrestha' and I belong to the Anacardiaceae family.
My fruit flesh is safe for pets, but keep them away from my leaves and milky sap, which contain natural irritants; always ensure the pit is safely discarded.
My dense, evergreen canopy acts as an efficient air filter, absorbing CO2 and providing a cooling shade that benefits the local garden ecosystem.
I am rich in Vitamin A and Beta-carotene, and because my flesh is firm and resists bruising, I am an ideal variety for long-distance transport and export.
I am relatively hardy, but like most hybrids, I should be monitored for mango hoppers during flowering and protected from fruit flies during the ripening stage.
I am a sturdy and productive perennial tree that can continue to provide you with "top-tier" harvests for 40 to 60 years with proper management.
