I am Kokum, the purple jewel of the Konkan coast. My tangy rind cools the body, soothes the gut, and colors curries with a ruby hue. I thrive in humid forests, offering fruit, shade, and healing in every season.
I am a tropical evergreen tree producing sour, purple fruits used in food and medicine.
Endemic to the Western Ghats of India; found in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Water weekly during dry spells; prefers humid conditions.
Partial shade to full sun.
Thrives in 25–35°C; sensitive to frost.
Plant in well-drained lateritic or loamy soil; spacing 6–8 meters apart.
Apply compost and NPK 8:10:10 twice a year; mulch to retain moisture.
Botanical name: Garcinia indica; Family: Clusiaceae.
Fruits are safe; seeds not consumed.
Moderate; dense canopy reduces heat and dust.
Fruits rich in hydroxycitric acid (HCA), anthocyanins, and vitamin C; used for digestion, weight loss, and skin health.
Generally pest-resistant; may suffer from root rot in waterlogged soils.
Can live 40–60 years; starts fruiting in 5–7 years; peak yield from year 10 onward.
