I am a charming and distinctive variety, aptly named because my round shape and vibrant red-over-yellow skin make me look exactly like a large, ripe apple hanging from a tree. I produce medium-to-large, nearly spherical fruits. My flesh is a beautiful golden-yellow, firm yet juicy, and remarkably low in fiber, offering a refreshing, sweet-tart flavor with a hint of spicy-floral notes.
I am a dual-purpose mango, loved for my high ornamental value in gardens and my excellent eating quality, featuring a thick skin that makes me very durable for handling.
While many "Apple Mangoes" exist globally, I am most famous in East Africa (specifically Kenya) and as a specialty cultivar in Florida (USA) and Southeast Asia.
I prefer moderate and consistent watering; I am relatively drought-tolerant once established, but I need regular moisture during fruit-set to maintain my plump, round shape.
I am a sun-enthusiast; I require 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight to develop the brilliant red pigments on my skin that give me my "apple" appearance.
I thrive in warm, tropical to subtropical climates between 24°C and 35°C and am better at handling coastal humidity than many other varieties.
I grow into a medium-to-large tree with a dense, rounded canopy; I prefer well-draining soil, ranging from sandy loams to light clays.
I respond well to organic compost and a balanced fertilizer with a slightly higher potassium ratio to help develop my thick skin and enhance the "snap" of my flesh.
My scientific name is Mangifera indica 'Apple' and I belong to the Anacardiaceae family.
My fruit flesh is a safe treat for pets, but my skin is tougher than most, and the round pit is a significant choking hazard that must be kept away from them.
My large, glossy evergreen leaves are fantastic at filtering air pollutants and creating a cool, lush microclimate in your backyard.
I am rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants; my firm, "crunchy-sweet" texture makes me one of the best mangoes for slicing into salads or eating fresh off the tree.
I am generally hardy, but I can be prone to powdery mildew in very humid springs, so I appreciate a spot with good air circulation.
I am a resilient and long-lived perennial tree that can continue to yield colorful, apple-like harvests for 40 to 60 years.
