All Details

I am a woody perennial vine known as the "King of Spices," famous for my small, pungent berries that are harvested and dried to create the world's most popular seasoning.

I am a climbing vine with glossy, heart-shaped leaves and long clusters of small green berries that turn red as they ripen.

I am native to the tropical, humid evergreen forests of the Malabar Coast in Southwestern India.

I love water and high humidity; I need frequent watering to keep my soil consistently moist, especially during my flowering stage.

I prefer bright, dappled sunlight or partial shade, as I naturally climb up trees to find the perfect light balance.

I thrive in hot, tropical climates between 25°C and 35°C and will stop growing if temperatures drop below 15°C.

I need a strong support structure or "standard" tree to climb, and I prefer rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.

I am a heavy feeder; I appreciate regular applications of organic manure and balanced fertilizers throughout the rainy season.

My scientific name is Piper nigrum and I belong to the Piperaceae family.

My berries and foliage contain piperine, which can be irritating or toxic to cats and dogs if ingested in large amounts.

My dense, climbing canopy is highly efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing fresh oxygen into the garden.

I am used to enhance digestion, improve nutrient absorption, and provide a sharp, spicy heat to almost every cuisine globally.

I am susceptible to "quick wilt" (Phytophthora) and root rot if my soil remains waterlogged for too long.

I am a long-living vine that can remain productive and provide harvests for over 20 to 30 years with proper care.
